Like many of you, I’m in the mad dash of holiday shopping for all of my favorite folks on the NICE list. It can be a challenge to pick just the right gift especially for the youngest of the bunch. When it comes to buying holiday gifts for the kiddos on your list I think we all want to give something that will be played with and enjoyed time and time again, and encourage hours of creative fun.

As an educator, play expert, and parent, I’ve tested and shared many toys and games on my site and on television over the last 20 years. Summer Break is HERE!

Our kiddos are wrapping up their collective school years and we’re beginning to turn our eyes to a summer break full of fun and games, right? Or are you bracing yourself for 6-8 weeks as your kids cruise director?

It’s my firm belief that if we really want more “spontaneous” fun and playfulness in our lives, we have to plan for it, and let our kids take some ownership for their own summer fun.

It sounds super counter-intuitive, but time and again we all talk a big “summer fun” game, and then end up falling into our same old routines, and never quite DOING all those seemingly frivolous things we mutter-on about. We are NOT our kids’ balloon-animal-making clowns! Help them plan their own fun!

Doozers Season 2 Launches Today!

I will always have a very soft spot for quality children’s television. I grew up in the height of the Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood and Sesame Street era… two educational children’s shows that were thoughtful, respectful, and sprinkled with a heaping dose of imagination, creativity, and fun.

Just after completing my Masters degree in Education, I landed a full-circle dream job at a PBS station called WQED Pittsburgh. As an educational consultant for national productions, I learned how great children’s programming is made. One floor below WQED was Family Communications, home of Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood.

Many of my lunch breaks were spent slipping into the Neighborhood of Make Believe studio and watching Fred Rogers work his magic. His extreme respect for children was the foundation of every episode. He knew how smart children already were, and wanted them to know it too.

The first time I visited Henson Studios here in L.A., I was struck by how similar the “vibe” was to that of Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood. They “get” children in the same way, and it’s apparent in everything they create.

Last week I was invited back for a screening and launch party for Season 2 of their show “Doozers” on Hulu.

You remember the Doozers right? Those adorable little construction workers from Fragggle Rock? Well they have their own show now, and it’s simply delightful!

Each animated episode is geared specifically for the pre-school set and features four best friends, AKA “The Pod Squad”, who live and learn in Doozer Creek.

The series focuses on encouraging kids to be innovators and inventors, and to embrace their own “can-do” spirit. It’s clear that an abundance of thought and care is put into the show’s STEAM curriculum, and I was struck by how well-written and “tight” each episode is… especially for 3-5 year olds. Proof they also respect and understand just how smart children already are.

If you’ve got a pre-schooler in your home, Doozers will make you feel actually good about a little bit of screen time. It’s a beautiful launch pad for discussion and a catalyst for creativity, encouraging kids to playfully discover the world around them

Doozers premieres May 25th exclusively on Hulu.

My Interview with Kristen Bell at Mom 2.0

If you follow me on social media, then you are well aware that I attended the Mom2.0 Summit last week in Pasadena. This gathering of digital women, mainly mothers, is a place for bloggers, vloggers, authors, digital influencers, marketers, media, PR, brands, and friends to connect over the unique HUSTLE that is making it in the online playing field.

This year was extra special because Mom2.0 turned 10 years old! A whole decade of digital power-women supporting each other… BOOM!

I have been to all but maybe two Mom2.0’s, so these summits always feel part high school reunion/ part business conference, with a whole lot of inside jokes and ab-workout worthy laughter sprinkled on top.

One of the highlights this year was a keynote interview with Kristen Bell when she sat down with Access LIVE’s Natalie Morales for a chat about motherhood, philanthropy, marriage, Hollywood, and everything in between. I liked Kristen a whole lot before, but I’m full on girl-crushing on her now. She’s as witty, fun, and real as you hope her to be.

And as if that weren’t enough…. I GOT TO INTERVIEW HER NEXT!

That’s right, we had a one-on-one pow-wow for TODAY Parents over on TODAY.com!
In the interview, Kristen Bell opens up about anxiety and depression, her social media rules, and of course, playing with her kids!

On the last day of the conference I held a PLAYshop called "The Success Building Magic of Goofing Off" in one of the Langham Hotels cottages that pepper the back lawn. It was an intimate gathering where we focused on how to incorporate more playfulness into our daily hustle.

We laughed, we cried, we made promises to ourselves to PLAY as hard as we work… or at least half as hard.

Friday night brought us the coveted IRIS Awards. Our version of the Golden Globes, where the best in blogs, vlogs, LIVE feeds, podcasts, philanthropic campaigns, instagram feeds, and more are honored by the community.

I was thrilled to present the award I won last year, “Break Out of the Year" to Happy Loud Life. If you don’t follow them, go… go now.

Five fun DIY ideas for Mother's Day

Looking for some unexpected gift ideas this year for Mother's Day? I've got you covered with five fun and easy gift ideas for the women you're celebrating.

1. 10 Balloons & 10 Things I Love About You

Adapted from this fun surprise idea from Studio DIY, fill a big box with ten helium balloons. Then, tie one note to each balloon with a special message. The balloons may not last forever, but she'll keep the notes for years to come. We even created a special printable with beautiful cards with prompts (and a few blank ones) you can print and use for your notes. Download the printable here.

2. A Year of "Open When..." Cards

I love the idea of "Open When..." cards. A little pick-me-up when we need it the most. We've created a printable so you can give mom a year's worth of "Open When..." cards. It includes 52 cards, with lots of prompts to get you started, and a few blank labels so you can include some inside jokes and special secrets you share.

There are four envelope labels on each page, so print and cut them out. Then use a glue stick or cute washi tape to attach them to envelopes. They're 3x5 inches and can fit most envelopes. Inside the envelopes, include notes, photos, or little gifts. Download the Open When Cards printable here.

3. Photo Bookmarks

I love these "fly away" bookmarks created by Wendy Hyde. Have your kids post like they're being lifted away by balloons (or whatever funny pose they love), print them out, and use them to create these bookmarks. 4. Family LEGO Portrait

Does you family love LEGO? I always enjoy seeing the latest mini-figs that come out, which makes this project just super fun. 5. Pom Pom Branches

Give mom a super unique bouquet by creating your own Pom Pom Branches. I made these last Fall and they were so easy, and pretty! I still have them in my living room today. My new favorite plaything: Nintendo Labo

“Fri-YAY!” has become quite the thing lately, and I love it.

And today is an extra-special Fri-YAY because today is the launch of one of my most favorite new playthings EVER… Nintendo Labo!

In my line of work, I see and often get to test out, a lot of new toy and game inventions.

So when one takes my breath away with excitement and awe, you know it’s something mighty special.

My son Truman and I got to travel to San Francisco recently for a hosted trip by Nintendo to learn about, and fully wrap ourselves up in Nintendo Labo’s greatness.

While these new sets are intended for kids slightly younger than my 16 year old son, he was instantly sucked in (as was I), by its innovation and “maker” style play.

Nintendo Labo kits invite children to “make, play, and discover”. To be active participants in the creation and exploration of their own playtime. Each maker kit comes with cardboard punch-out parts that kids bend and fold and connect together to create various toys and games.

Then, once built, the Nintendo Switch brings the toy or game to life. Your kids can create things like a working piano, a fishing pole with which to catch digital fish, a driving console, and more. Using a free app that provides 3D instructions that you can see from various angles, kids create each new plaything with ease.

There are several kits to pick from, and each one is as delightful as the next.

Keeping It Classic on National Stripes Day

Back in 1984, when I was a full on teenager, the classic striped rugby shirt seemed to be on everyone’s style wish list.

The pullover that turned my head when worn by the upperclassmen boys I crushed on, and for me, something I really wanted for my own closet.

Back then, J. Crew was a bit out of my parent’s budget, so I never possessed a real one of my own.

Fast forward 34 years, I’m shopping with my family at the Grove in LA, and you can only imagine my teenage elation when I see the windows of J. Crew peppered with brightly striped rugby shirts on parade!

Yep, They’re BAAAAACK! It’s all 1984 up in here, girls and boys!

It should come as no surprise that I marched myself right in there, and bought myself one on the spot. I know these bad boys aren’t going to last, and I wasn’t about to miss my shot.

It was hard to decide on the color-combo… there are so many to pick from! But after a little consult with my hubs (who consequently I met in 1985 so he gets it), I landed on the orange and white color combo (or Cerise Ivory as J. Crew calls it). It just feels most like me, and perfect for the launch of SPRING!

For a spring walk, I paired my new fave shirt with some white denim and my go-to sneakers. I can't wait to mix it up. In the video below from J. Crew, they recommend pairing with a full skirt! Love it!

With tomorrow being the second annual National Stripes Day (created by J. Crew of course), I figured this was the perfect opportunity to share this style fave. For me, this throw-back fashion classic is a playful reminder to let my inner 14 year old out a little more… especially during spring.

Roxy's Faves for National Puppy Day

Today is National Puppy Day, so of course I'm showering our family pup Roxy with oodles of love, lots of play, and some long walks.

We rescued this old-soul, playful yet gentle spirit of a dog when she was three months old. We weren’t looking for a dog. At all. But this pup and I locked eyes, I asked if I could hold her, and something inside me knew I didn’t want ANY puppy... I wanted THIS puppy.

I also knew with my youngest boy going to full day school that fall, she would be the perfect new sidekick. And I was spot on.

Since she's part of the Sinclair crew, of course she also has a very playful puppy lifestyle. Today I'm sharing a few of her favorite things (that we love as well).

Dressing for Success with Talbots and Oprah

If you know me AT ALL, you know that I’m a sucker for owning my style. I love playfully mixing and matching, and putting outfits together that really show who I am underneath it all.

For the last two years, I’ve been helping my friends at Talbots and O Magazine to promote an amazing fashion collaboration that benefits Dress for Success. Anytime style gives back, it’s a really great thing. This year they asked if I’d help spread the word again, and it was an immediate "YES!”

In this Month’s O, the Oprah Magazine, you’ll see some philanthropic celebrities sporting the beautiful collection. Think of it as a look book worn by some of your favorite ladies of the small screen. Talbots let me select some of my favorite pieces of the collection, so I could show you all just how wonderful they are, in person.

30% of the net proceeds from the collection will directly benefit Dress for Success, an international non-profit organization that gives women the tools they need to achieve economic independence. As the youngest of three children that grew up with a single mom, who worked many jobs to provide for us, I can tell you that Dress of Success would have been such a blessing to our family.

Women's History Month and International Women's Day aren't the only time we should be celebrating women, but they are a great reminder for us to empower the women around us and celebrate all the wonderful things they do.

There are so so many organizations, companies, and initiatives that are leading by example, and today I wanted to share just a few that I'm more familiar with. Hopefully they'll inspire you to empower and lift up the women in your life, and around the world.

Beauty Begins Within

I've been so impressed by justBobbi, created by beauty icon Bobbi Brown, and their partnership with Health Warrior, a superfood snack company. They've teamed up to created a Dragon Fruit Chia Bar exclusively for Girls, Inc., and organization that empowers girls to be strong, smart, and bold.

Ladies Get Paid empowers women to be confident in their work and get the pay (and promotions) they deserve, and they have fun doing it. Founded by Claire Wasserman, LGP hosts town halls, meet ups, workshops, happy hours, and more, all focused on helping you kick some serious butt in your career and connect with other women doing the same thing. Oh, and their "mascot" is a pink scrunchie.

One of my favorite things about Ladies Get Paid is their emphasis on self-care and community building. We shouldn't be pushing each other off the mountain while we race to the top, we should make sure to stop for a mani-pedi on the way, and maybe a cocktail or two with our friends.

Ladies Get Paid also has a strong online community, where members can share work advice, resources, job opportunities, or just talk. It's all about creating connections and empowering women to lift each other up, and build their own confidence at the same time. And although this group is all about the cash, LGP is free to join.

How to Throw an Oscars Watch Party

Living in L.A. seems to give the Oscars a lil' extra weight. It almost feels like Sunday is a big holiday we're all eagerly anticipating.

One of my favorite ways to "do" award shows is to have people over for a watch party. And I'm not talking about Red Carpet status. More like, invite a bunch of friends over (tell them its a potluck so you don't have to prep it all yourself), and have some ways to play along with the show planned out.

Set the Stage

First things first: hang some shiny things and make it your official selfie station. You'll prob not be able to top this epic Oscars selfie, but hey, Hollywood is where dreams come true.

These gold garlands are perfect for an Oscars party, and can be reused for basically any occasion.

Something that has totally changed my hosting game are wine glass markers. I was always losing the ones that attach to the stem, and these markers wash right off the glass. Instead of names, try using categories instead. Give your bestie the "Best Supporting Actress" glass, and your musically-inclined pal the glass for "Best Original Song".

Another fun idea that requires basically zero prep work, is setting the mood with music. As guests are arriving, play the nominated soundtracks, courtesy this ready-to-go Oscars Spotify playlist.

Print out my custom 2018 Oscars Bingo game, with seven unique sheets to decrease the chances of your friend getting a "Bingo!" at the same time as you. For your Bingo game, grab a pack of multi-colored bingo markers and place them in a glass bowl or box for a pop of color and functional centerpiece.

I've also created a 2018 Oscars Ballot you can fill out before the show or during the Red Carpet.

Print out a quote from Best Picture nominee "Call Me By Your Name". It prints at 5x7, and I recommend popping it in a bold frame and placing it on the table for a little something extra.

Serve Winning Refreshments

One of my favorite ideas for hosting game nights and other get togethers is a popcorn bar. It's a quick set-up and sure to please everyone. My pro-tip is to buy pre-popped popcorn like G.H. Cretors. They have amazing flavors and I love how easy it is to mix-and match. Plus, popcorn and movies just go together like peanut butter and jelly.

I love this idea I found on Pinterest to use star shaped cookie cutters to create a Walk of Fame cheese platter. As simple as it can get with just a bit of pizzaz!

And of course, a jar of Red Vines, another classic cinema snack. But labeled as your red carpet ropes.

Helping Kids Stay Active Indoors with Yoga

Indoor play seems to be one of the most popular topics I'm asked to talk year after year. Whether it's for rainy days, too-hot summer days, long weekends, or these winters that just don't seem to end.

I've shared lots of my favorite toys and games for indoor play, without breaking everything in the house, as well as DIY's that will keep kids active indoors. But today I wanted to share something I don't touch on too often, which is how to get your kids exercising in a more traditional sense, like through yoga.

My friend Jenny Silverstone shared this great piece on Mom Loves Best about all the benefits yoga can have for our young ones. I love this infographic she put together addressing some of them:

Jenny also has a few tips for introducing your kids to yoga, including:

Be a leader.

I think this is so important. Jenny notes that kids mimic your behavior, which is totally try. Even if you've never done a Sun Salutation in your life, try out yoga with your kids, and be willing to laugh at yourself when you have trouble balancing.

Keep it fun and easy.

Don't worry about the technical aspects of yoga. Focus on the simple concepts like breathing and being mindful of your own body. One great idea Jenny has is to try out poses that mimic your child's favorite animal, which I love!

Don't chase perfection.

When you're new at yoga, or any new hobby, it can be hard not to compare yourself to the professionals. Remind kids to listen to their bodies and do their best, and the more they practice, the more they'll see progress.

Add in songs and dances.

Playing your child's favorite music will make this so much more fun for them and YOU. I love when my local yoga studio has theme nights like 90's music, or all Beatles hits.

Let your child be the leader.

Kids love to play pretend and be the "adult" in the room. Once you've practiced yoga a few times, let them choose the poses and sequences for you to follow along with.

DIY Yoga Mat Idea

As with any exercise, sometimes it's easy to get wrapped up in the more material side of the activity like buying the coolest yoga pants or the hippest gym bag. Finding a fun outfit to wear that makes you feel good and a mat in your favorite color is great, but don't worry about looking "Instagram ready". It's important to teach this to your kids as well.

But if your kids like practicing yoga, and want to get more into it, try having them create their own yoga mat and style for their practice. I love this activity from my friends at Hallmark Channel for making a DIY kids yoga mat. Check out the video below:

Just like yoga isn't a favorite for all adults, it won't be a favorite for all kids, but it might be a great fit for yours and worth giving a try. Jenny also shares some precautionary instructions, which are important to review before getting started.

Olympic Ring Protein Pancakes

I've been counting down to the official kick-off of the Winter Olympics, tonight's Opening Ceremony, for what feels like foreverrrrr, and tonight we finally get to watch! I recommend playing this Bingo game to add the competitive edge.

Tonight we'll be watching the broadcast version on NBC, since the Opening Ceremony is actually already in the books. There's quite a time difference between the States and South Korea, where the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic games are being held. In case you weren't sure they're almost a day ahead of us:

Eastern time: 14 hours
Central time: 15 hours
Mountain time: 16 hours
Pacific time: 17 hours

Of course there are special broadcasts on our TV stations to accommodate, you know, those of us with normal sleep schedules. But I'm sure there are some diehards that love to stream the events live.

No matter what time you're watching the Olympic Athletes compete their hearts out, these Krusteaz Protein Pancakes make a great breakfast or snack. If you have kids, it's a good way to have a conversation about the lifestyle and diets of these athletes.

They're also just super delicious.

I made this batch with an extra protein punch, combining the mix with milk and eggs instead of water. Once the batter was made, I divided it into five smaller bowls to do the separate coloring.

They were super fluffy and had that perfect golden color... or at least they would have if I hadn't used food dye...

It was a little difficult to get those really solid tones of the Olympic Rings, but these were a lot of fun to make, and I never promised you a food blog. In case you want to avoid food coloring, I'd recommend finding toppings that work to make the colors of the rings. Strawberry jam for red, maybe some Oreo crumble for black... get creative and let everyone create their own plate. A few weeks ago I used this protein pancake mix with blueberries I had frozen last summer and they were deeeelicious, and a great way to start the weekend.

Ideas for Celebrating Galentine's Day

I absolutely love the February holiday Galentine's Day.

Born from "Parks and Rec", Galentine's Day let's us celebrate the love we find in our female friendships.

One section of my book, "Well Played", is dedicated to playing with your friends. Keeping those relationships strong, and fun!, and this is the perfect excuse to get together or send love to long-distance pals.

It's also a great excuse to reclaim a bunch of Valentine's Day traditions. Take those ideas and turn them into celebrations of friendship. Here are a few ideas I love "borrowing" from Valentine's Day for Galentine's Day:

Classroom Valentines

Classroom Valentines are so dang cute, and usually filled with awesome puns (that often go over kids heads). Minted has some amazing designs this year and I'm tempted to drop them in all my neighbor's mailboxes (would that be super weird?).You'll need a larger envelope if you chose to send them off to friends since these are too small to mail.

I really love the Social Media and Food & Drink themes at Minted right now, but they're truly all great. You can even grab matching stickers, and have printing done right on them to save the time signing them all. I think they'd be great to sneak into a friend's purse during your next brunch date at any time of the year.

If you have a Galentine's Day get together, try copying another classroom idea and have everyone craft their own "mailbox" to drop valentine's in for one another. Grab your craft bin, or run to the dollar store to stock up on some pom poms and hot glue, then decorate a small box.

Wine and Chocolate Tasting

Take a friend to a wine or chocolate bar, or create one at your home. Print off your own wine label to celebrate the occasion, and crack it open or save it for your Galentine's celebration next year making it a tradition.

I've found some really cute custom labels over on Etsy in the past, and wanted to share my own this year. Use sticker paper, or just normal paper and some fun washi tape, to make the bottle your own. This printable is 3 1/2" x 4" and should fit any wine bottle.

Dinner and a Movie

Reclaim classic date night for you and your friends. Host a binge-watching party or movie marathon at home, or if you can, make a reservation at your favorite restaurant and movie theater.

Write A Love Story

Giving your mate a list or book of reasons you love them can be pretty romantic. But it can also be a great way to show your playmates how much you appreciate their friendship. If you're feeling creative, DIY a booklet, but if that's not your thing there are some great books you can buy and fill out with custom sentiments.

Knock Knock has a great "Fill in the Love" series that I've gifted a few times to different family members, and they make such a great present for friends too. They're the perfect size to keep around for when your friend needs to feel a little bit of love.

I hope this inspired a few ideas for you to share with your girlfriends how important they are to you. If you can't get together for Galentine's Day, pick another day this month and block out time just for you.

How to Host a Fun Adult Game Night

Today my first ever segment on the Harry show aired, and I have to say, it was an absolute BLAST to film. If you told me even a month ago I'd be playing drinking games with Harry Connick Jr I would have laughed REAL hard. But 2018 is turning out to be full of surprises.

Games

Utter Nonsense: Naughty Edition

Utter Nonsense is one of my family's favorite games, but when it's just adults around, we like to break out this version of it. Utter Nonsense: Naughty Edition will have you laughing for hours, with friends old and new. Using silly accents to deliver lines that are just plain ridiculous, even the most shy person in the room will love joining in.

PongBot

Listen, drinking games can be fun even if you're no longer college-age. And PongBot has quickly become a favorite for me. Compete individually, or on a team, to throw ping-pong balls into cups held by the little robot. Each round, have someone different man the remote control, or set it to auto-pilot and all compete at once!

Snacks

Popcorn Bar

I love a good popcorn bar because everyone wins. It's an easy set-up and clean-up for the host, and everyone gets to make their own custom snack that's easy to eat in-between turns during whatever game you're playing.

An absolute MUST for your popcorn bar is pre-popped popcorn. I love G.H. Cretors because it makes it impossible to fill your home with a burnt-popcorn smell, and their bags of popcorn are just delicious. I recommend grabbing a few bags of their more traditional flavors, like Extra Virgin Olive Oil and The Mix (Caramel Corn and Cheddar Cheese Corn!), and one kind of crazy flavor like Organic Dill Pickle.

Then stock up on mix-ins. We like to have a few bowls of treats like chocolate chips, mini-pretzels, crunchy cereals, nuts, sprinkles, fancy salts, and gummy candies.

Sweet and Salty Snack Board

Any classy adult party has a cheese board, right? Take it up a notch and create a full snack board. I promise this is actually going to feel like less work. Less pressure on making a restaurant-worthy cheese board, and more focus on making a platter full of grab-able treats. Pro-tip, fill your plate or platter to the edge and use some fun snack picks to make things festive. A crowded platter always looks more appetizing than a few bits and pieces scattered around a wood board.

For the salty: Crackers, cheeses, mixed nuts, potato chips, chip dip, pita chips, hummus, salami, beef jerky, bite-size pickled or fresh veggies

For the sweet: Cookies, yogurt pretzels, fresh and dried fruits, your favorite candy, really good chocolates, honey or jam

Some of the mix-ins from your popcorn bar can work great here as well.

Sparkling Sangria Lemonade

Instead of mixing everyone individual cocktails throughout the night, make refills easy with a pre-made mixed drink for the group. This recipe for Sparkling Ginger and Sangria Lemonade is refreshing and simple enough to put your own twist on. All you need to get started is a few ingredients: lemons, white wine, honey, and ginger ale.

Keep the punch bowl in the cupboard and instead serve your sangria or other mixed beverage in a tall, clear dispenser. This acrylic drink dispenser has a well for ice in the bottom to keep your mixed drink chilled without watering it down. Or if you want to serve a few options, this pack of two glass mason jar drink dispensers is perfect.

Decorations

You don't have to pull out the full party box and go crazy, but having a few decorations can make game night feel extra special. I love these little things that pack a big punch.

Winter Olympics Activities for Kids

The Winter Olympics in PyeongChang are a month away, and I know my family can't wait to watch. We spent the weekend skiing at Mammoth and it got me so excited for the upcoming games.

In the next couple of weeks, I'll be sharing some ideas for Olympic watch parties, including ideas for families and adults. Also make sure you're following my Winter Olympics for Kids Pinterest board to keep track of all the ideas and games. To get us started, here are some fun activities I've loved doing with my kids over the years that you can get a head start on.

DIY Olympic Torch

This is a fun one to do leading up to the Opening Ceremonies. The torch has already been on it's journey to PyeongChang for a while, and this is a great way to get kids looking forward to the games. Making your own torch is an awesome creative activity that's also a great opportunity to learn about how each games has it's own custom torch design, and how you would represent yourself or your own country! Printable International Flag Garland Coloring Pages

This is another really great way to play that can also be educational. There are 12 different countries represented in this PDF, and I'm guessing not a lot of them are common in a lot of our kids' school books. This is a great way to opportunity to learn a few new things about some far away places. Once each flag is colored, cut them out, fold over the line, and use string or ribbon to hang them up in your home. Make this ahead of time as a decoration to get your house in the playful spirit for the games. (I also included a cheat sheet for the correct flag colors, so you don't have to Google the ones you are unsure of.) Get it here.

Put Yourself on the Podium

Did you imagine yourself on the podium when you were a kid? Did you ever want to grow up to be in the Olympics? Based on my current skiing skills, I wouldn't have quite made the team, but it's fun to imagine myself on those slopes! Draw yourself or your favorite athletes on the podium, or use this printable to track the medal count for your home country. Print your podium.

Play Opening Ceremony Bingo

We LOVE a silly bingo game around here and created one just for the 2018 Winter Olympics featuring athletes and advertisements we know we'll see, and in anticipation of some rumored surprises. There are seven different sheets, so nobody has to have the exact same card. The Opening Ceremonies are so fun to watch, but can seem a little repetitive and long, so this mixes things up and makes you notice things you wouldn't otherwise. Print the PDF here.

A few more ideas for celebrating the Olympics with kids:

Create a team t-shirt for your family using craft paint or stamps.
Play games at home. Have a sled relay race, or use Nerf bows to compete in archery.
Use recyclable materials to make coveted medals or ribbons, then construct a winners podium from boxes or plastic containers.
Create keychains or bracelets using beads the colors of the Olympic rings.

Stuck Inside DIY Play Guide

TGIF, for real. I spent a whirlwind of a week in NYC, with three segments packed in. First on Tuesday, I dropped by Little Things and played charades on their show, Refresh. Then on Wednesday, I taped a segment at a brand new to me show, Harry! I had SO much fun, and hope I get to go back soon. Mark your calendars, it airs on January 23.

And then this morning on Today, I shared some simple DIY ideas to keep kids entertained when it's too cold to go outside. .

Snowman Breakfast

Start the day on the right foot with a big snowman breakfast, complete with snowman waffles. Get the kids out of bed and have them help in the kitchen. For your waffle snowman, I recommend topping the waffles with vanilla yogurt, and decorating with raisins, sprinkles, blueberries, or whatever else gives your snowman some character.

Grab a few inexpensive clear mugs from the store and decorate them using markers or construction paper to create a happy Snowman face. Fill the mug with white hot chocolate or milk, topped with whipped cream!

One final snowman treat: three small powdered donuts skewered onto a straw, topped off with a fruit leather scarf, and a gum drop nose.

Ice Cream Snow Man

For a non-breakfast treat, make a snowman sundae! Use vanilla ice cream for his melting body, and a marshmallow for his head. Have the kid decorate their own snowman using icing, candies and licorice.

Laundry Basket Skeeball

Skeeball is one of my favorite arcade games, and I love this version you can set up for inside using a recycled box and some laundry baskets. Use ball pit balls or tennis balls, and decide on how many points each basket will be worth. Try moving the baskets around for special challenges.

Salt Crystal Snowflakes

Grab a few pipe cleaners and twist them into a snowflake shape. Tie your snowflake to a pencil and place it inside a large mason jar. Make sure the snowflake doesn't touch the sides of the jar. Then carefully fill the jar with Borax solution (3 tablespoons Borax per 1 cup water) until the snowflake is completely submerged.

Let your experiment sit over night. In the morning, you'll have "grown" a beautiful crystal snowflake!

Egg Carton Snowmen

I love crafts that use recyclables and simple craft items you likely have laying around the house. And you guessed it, we're using recycled egg cartons for these little guys. Make sure you keep three egg holders in a row when you cut up the carton (this is a good part of the activity for adults to do). Then have kids use googly eyes, pip cleaners, mini pom poms to dress up their own snowman.

Indoor Snowballs

Don't worry, we aren't gathering snow from outside and bringing it into the house. Instead, make indoor snowballs using white yarn and string! These are safe for an indoor snowball fight, and you won't end the afternoon with soggy boots.

Balloon Ping Pong

Always have balloons in your house. They are an easy way to keep kids entertained for hours. Take it up a level and make ping-pong paddles for them to swat at the balloon with. Kids can decorate their paper plates, too.

Cities across the country have had quite a bit of snow lately. With snow days and long winter weekend in the forecast for the next few months, it can be hard to think about ways to keep kids active while they're stuck indoors... without turning the entire house upside.

I've found five awesome activities kids can do to keep them moving, and keep the chaos contained and the glass unbroken. I wish some of these were around when my boys were little...

Ultimate Fort Builder

This fort builder comes with 45 poles and 25 connectors that are easy for kids as young as four to put together. Your kids can literally build any shape fort they want. It even comes with a guide with some ideas and directions to get them started.

Playz Pop Up Playhouse and Ball Pit

Like a mini-version of the indoor playground, but this packs up for easy storage and is super easy to assemble. You can use each of the four pieces in different combinations, so it is bound to fit in your space in one way or another. Plus, you won't find any unidentifiable objects in this ball pit.

Leave the dining chairs at the table and build a fort with air instead. There's no bottom to this AirFort, so it's easy for kids to get in and out with no problems. Plus, it blows up in just seconds with a box fan and is big enough you can hide out in there, too.

Now this is something you're going to want to play with, too. My family L-O-V-E-S New Year's Eve. It's the perfect time to laugh about all the inside jokes from the past year, and look forward to all the adventures you'll have in the upcoming 365 days.

This is an awesome activity you can do while you wait for the ball to drop. Pack the capsule with your best memories from the year—ticket stubs, photos, anything goes! Plus, I've updated my New Years Eve printable to help remind you of the best days of 2017. We love filling these out and reminiscing about the best and craziest things that happened.

Christmas Scattergories Printable

We had so much fun playing Thanksgiving Scattergories last month, I decided to modify the printable for Christmas.

If you're hosting your family for Christmas celebrations, this is a great game that all ages can play together.

There are two parts to this printable: player sheets and category cards. I recommend printing the player sheets double sided so each player just needs a half sheet of paper, making it easier for everyone to find a hard surface like a book to use to write on. And, there are nine different category cards so you can play a few rounds without things getting repetitive.

You'll also need a timer and an alphabet die. If you own the regular Scattergories game, just grab those out of the box box. If you don't have an alphabet die, you could write all the letters of the alphabet on a piece of paper, cut them up, and have someone choose randomly from a basket. Or, use the letters of your family's last name in order through the rounds.

This printable is 100% free because nothing makes me happier than having all generations having FUN together during the holidays.
