Rainy days are a challenge when it comes to keeping the kids entertained. They don’t always respond well to being cooped up in the house, but that doesn’t mean you have to be bored.
With all that pent up energy and nowhere to go, it can quickly turn into a ‘what do we do now?’ situation when you’re trying to entertain multiple children at once. Fear not, however. There are plenty of fun and easy ways to keep your kids entertained when the weather is incorporating. Here are our top 4 tips for entertainment on a rainy day.
- Stream movies and TV shows. If you’ve got older kids, one of the easiest ways to pass the time on rainy days is by streaming movies and TV shows. Grab some snacks, set up the blankets, and have a movie marathon right in your living room. Who needs to pay for the cinema when you can access a range of streaming services and keep your kids entertained for hours? You can even make it a special event by creating a movie schedule, fake tickets, and lots of snacks. If the kids need a little bit of extra fun, you could even turn it into a themed day with trivia. Superhero Saturday with Marvel movies, for example, will go down very nicely.
- Create your own indoor obstacle course. You don’t need to have specialist equipment for this one. Dining chairs, duvets over the top of them to create tunnels, and couch cushions can all help you to create an obstacle course around the house. There’s plenty of furniture options that you can pull across the room to create something for them to climb on. You can time them to see how fast they can complete the course, or you can make it into a team challenge. If you want to make it more difficult, tie their ankles together and get them to do the course while in a three legged race!
- Bring out the DIY projects. Getting crafty on a rainy day is perfect. Whether it’s painting, building or even trying your hand at paper mache, you’ll be able to keep the kids occupied and entertained while allowing them to explore their artistic site. You could make homemade slime with YouTube video tutorials, decorate picture frames, or even get them to help you to decorate their bedrooms. If you want something simpler, a giant bucket of crayons and some colouring books are going to go a long way.
- Host your very own indoor disco. An indoor dance party is a great way to get the kids moving and grooving and burn off some of the restless energy that they have built up. Clear a space in the living room, put on their favourite tunes and let them have a dance. You could even theme it to different Disney songs or going for a different genre of music. You can throw in some fun games like freeze dance or musical chairs, and not only will it keep them entertained, but it will get everybody laughing and smiling. It might be storming outside but it doesn’t have to stop inside.
Rainy days don’t have to be boring. Embracing the cosy vibe and spending time together as a family even when you’re stuck inside, can be fun. The next time the weather turns grey, you’ll be ready with these rainy day ideas to get the kids going.
